The people of Johor are mourning as Sultan of Johor, Sultan Iskandar Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Ismail has passed away this evening at the Puteri Specialist Hospital at 7.08pm. As the people of Johor, we knew very well that our Sultan wasn’t in a good condition, but this is really unexpected.
He will be buried tomorrow at the Royal Mausoleum at 2.00pm, and the last respect ceremony is held at Istana Besar from 9.00am to 10.30am. Earlier, Tunku Mahkota of Johor, Tunku Ibrahim Ismail (Tunku Yem) was appointed as regent of Johor following his father’s condition. The swearing-in of the regent was held soon after at the Istana Besar here.
In the ceremony, Johor Council of Royal Court Yang DiPertua Tunku Osman Tunku Temenggong Ahmad declared that Tunku Ibrahim will perform the duties of the Sultan of Johor as required under Section 9(1)(b) and 9(2) of the Johor State Constitution 1895. During his declaration of oath as acting ruler, Tunku Ibrahim said that he would rule fairly for all the rakyat (people). “I also swear to guard and respect Islam as well as the Malay tradition under the state constitution,” he said.
History and sort of:
HRH Sultan Iskandar ibni al-marhum Sultan Ismail is the 24th Sultan of Johor and the 4th Sultan of modern Johor. He reign started since 1981 until 22 January 2010. He has reign for 29 years. Following his death, the throne is passed to his first son, Sultan Ibrahim Ismail ibni al-marhum Sultan Iskandar al-Haj.

Among the special traits of the Sultanate of Johor is, it has been ruled by 3 dynasties - the descendent of Malacca, the Bendahara and the Temenggung. Johor also was the only state in Malaysia to have its own army, Askar Timbalan Setia Negeri which serves as the private army to the Sultan of Johor. The protocol of the Johor Monarch is different where the protocols are mostly adapted from the Western Style rather than Malay Protocol. That’s why their official clothes are different.

Line to the Johor Throne:
Sultanate of Johor used Salic Law, which means only a male heir of the royal family can inherited the throne. The Heir apparent will use the title Tengku Mahkota (Crown Prince). The heir must also a decendents from Sultan Abu Bakar of Johor.
